haksa mei ah (I spell like I pronounce...dangerous)
PASSOVER HITS HARBORD BAKERY:
what everyone's told me:
You think this is busy? You should see us at New Years! That's busy! This? NOTHING! *as all 6 of us run around to the different parts of the bakery to collect one customer's whopping $356 worth order*
what I did most of time:
bag macaroons..which I recently learned was a passover specific treat...$7.75 a bag but we weight the pistachio bags at $15.00/lb coming to around $9.00 a bag. Each bag containing around 12 to 10 macaroons depending on what type. Best type...coconut dipped in chocolate.
what people kept being surprised about:
Those cakes? All those cakes are parv (right spelling?)? Those are passover cakes? REALLY??? *boggled by selection...then price...not that I blame them. $20 for a small chocolate almond cake? $18.99 for a small fruit flan with motza sponge base?? $22 for a medium sized chocolate chiffon cake? nice but still...steep*
best thing to happen to motza:
you take one wafer? cracker? then drizzle it with dark chocolate. then spread a little water based custard. then place some strawberries. then put another thing of motza ontop. then cover the entire thing with more dark chocolate. top with a sliver of strawberry. It's awesome. $2.75 for something the size of...let's see...a cue card. maybe a bit wider.
worst thing to happen to motza:
motza meal mixed with almond flour to form the base of the cookie. In centre of cookie place raspberry jam. Worse. Aftertaste. Ever.
nice surprise:
Susie-boss got us pizza :)
what I had to repeat a lot:
"We're closing for Passover. No bread. We ran out at 9:30. No. We're not baking more. Yeah. Look. Stop pouting at me. I think there are a couple bagles in the freezer I could get you. No. No bread. Yeah. Closing for Passover. Yeahyeah. Sorry. Yup. No bread at all. We've got lots of macaroons. Want one? Muffins? No. Passover. We're closing, see? Not open. Closed. Until May 2."
New taste sensation:
- motza in various forms. before today, only abstractly knew what motza was...
spoils of war (THE FREE!!):
- potatoes
- uh..this beef stew thing (we had to clear out the non-bakery food stuffs)
- potatoe kugel (right spelling?) ...it doesn't taste like much. I have a small tray of it. ... ... .. maybe I'm eating it wrong? am I supposed to add it to something? like ketchup?
- bag of coconut macaroons
- almond cookies
- the earlier described motza chocolate strawberry thing
- loaf of halla (right spelling?)
- some whitechocolate almond bark
- passover cake: motza sponge with fresh glazed strawberries on top
I wanted to quit before. Since I pretty much don't have a weekend, I was starting to burn out. Tax office 5 days then bakery for 3 (yes. I manage to fit 8 days in one week). But...the Free.
The Free and promises of future Free...makes it so much better.
And the envelope of money at the end of a day. That's always nice.
